LISD TECH Center Update - Threat Resolved

This morning, November 15, 2023, a suspected student confessed to local law enforcement to making yesterday’s threat at the LISD TECH Center. The information collected further reinforced the belief that there was no plan to carry out the threat. The LISD would like to thank the City of Adrian Police Department and district administration for their swift action and diligence in investigating the threat and identifying the individual responsible.

The student will not be returning to the LISD TECH Center, and will be subject to both criminal proceedings and school disciplinary action in accordance with applicable laws and LISD Board Policy and the student code of conduct.

The LISD TECH Center will continue to operate with enhanced security protocols in place, including a law enforcement presence, for the remainder of the day out of an abundance of caution.

The LISD and law enforcement take threats against schools very seriously, and will continue to do everything within their power to provide a safe learning environment for all students and staff. We would like to thank the student who reported the threat to LISD TECH Center administration, and would like to reinforce the importance of “if you see something, say something,” whether directly or through confidential tools like OK2SAY.

At approximately 2:45 PM, today, November 14, 2023, a LISD TECH Center student reported to the school administration a threat that was written on a LISD TECH Center restroom wall. The threat was identified after most students had departed for the day.

Upon learning of the threat, the LISD administration promptly notified the City of Adrian Police Department. Officers from the Adrian Police Department immediately began a thorough investigation into the threat. Additionally, the LISD has enacted its threat assessment procedures, which have been informed by school threat assessment experts and developed in cooperation with law enforcement.

Based on the information that has been collected thus far by law enforcement and the LISD, we have no reason to believe that the threats will be carried out. Thus, unless directed otherwise by law enforcement, the LISD TECH Center will be open for students and operate with an enhanced law enforcement – including canine units –and administrative presence throughout the day on November 15th and November 16th. Should these plans change, information will be communicated accordingly.

The LISD and law enforcement take threats against schools very seriously. Through their investigative work, law enforcement has identified a small list of possible suspects, none of whom will attend the LISD TECH Center until such time as they can be cleared of any involvement in this threat. The individual(s) responsible will be held accountable both criminally and through school disciplinary proceedings to the fullest extent of the law.

The LISD and local law enforcement will continue to do everything within their power to prevent and respond to threats of school violence. These threats are disruptive and unnecessarily create fear and distress among students and staff. They are also costly to investigate and prosecute the individuals responsible.

It is important that parents and students understand the seriousness of making threats against a school in Michigan. In addition to serious school disciplinary action, such as expulsion from school, under Michigan law, any person who threatens to commit an act of violence against students or school employees at school, regardless of intent or ability to carry out the threat, has committed a misdemeanor that is punishable by up one year of imprisonment. If it is determined that the threat was made with specific intent, the individual making the threat has committed a felony that is punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment.

If anyone has any information related to this threat and/or who may be responsible, please contact the Adrian Police Department at 517.264.4808 or the LISD at 517.265.2119. Email information may be sent to jperry@adrianmi.gov or Mark.Haag@lisd.us.
