Transportation
The LISD Special Education Transportation Department operates a fleet of 16 school buses daily. These buses travel a network of over 40 runs a day during the school year, covering more approximately 785 square miles while transporting just under 300 students to and from school. Summer school consists of approximately 11 routes with just over 120 students attending school. LISD buses travel over 500,000 miles every year, which is equal to about 80 round trips between New York and Los Angeles.
The LISD Transportation Department began transporting special needs students to school in the mid-1970s. LISD students live in all 11 of the local school districts, which also encompasses Hillsdale and Washtenaw counties. The LISD bus fleet recently received a 100% Pass Rating on a Michigan State Police school bus safety inspection report for the eighth consecutive year.
